This photo shows part of the oldest and most significant religious sites in Quito, Ecuador: Iglesia y Convento de San Francisco. It forms part of the City of Quito World Heritage Site, the first site to be written in the World Heritage List. The covenant was founded by a Franciscan missionary named Brother Jodoco Ricke for the Order of the Franciscan Monks. This building took more than a century to build starting around the mid 1530s. Today, it is a major cultural and religious center with almost a million visitors each year.

Nature category winner: Elizabeth Oliger '23
We were walking up a mountain in Killarney to get to the top of a waterfall and this was the view from a cliff over halfway up. Ireland is a place that merges myth and reality. For example, one of the locals explained to us how they know fairies don't exist, but if you tie a piece of cloth to a fairy tree and make a wish the fairies will make it come true.
Culture and celebration category winner: Narita Lambert '24
Among the islands of Greece there is an island named Hydra, where motorized modes of transportations are not allowed. This unique aspect of the island permits an atmosphere of peace and quietude which in turn creates a feeling of detachment from the rush of the American working lifestyle I left behind during this adventure abroad. In this photo, I documented the use of mules and donkeys on the island to transport loads up and around the sloping hills of Hydra.

Augie student abroad category winner: Iván Fregoso '23
I got kissed by a camel in Morocco. Riding a camel near the beach was one of my favorite things from my whole study abroad experience.

Amsterdam, Netherlands, Drawing in Situ J-term 2023
Art museums are often associated with the elite, but the Kroller-Muller museum in Otterlo, nestled in the woods and Dutch countryside, was full of visitors of all ages. I was fortunate enough to catch a photograph of this woman and her granddaughter as they reflected on three self portraits, each done ten years apart, by Dutch painter Charley Toorop. I could write an entire essay on how beautiful it was to see two women of vastly different ages coming together to view the work of another woman in her personal explorations of aging. This photo represents all that art museums should be; a place for people of any background to come together.

Maurepas Swamp, Louisiana, GEOG 230: Water and Environmental Justice J-term 2023
This photo was taken while kayaking in the Maurepas Swamp canal outside of New Orleans. We learned about the cypress, tupelo and oak-forested swamps that were in the city before it was drained to develop newer New Orleans neighborhoods and saw cool birds.

Honorable mention: Colin Stapleton '24
Sevilla, Spain, SSA fall semester abroad 2022
The Royal Alcázar of Sevilla sits in the heart of the city, consisting of both Muslim and Christian architecture and art. It serves as a testament to the development and variety of the city. Here I was in a hallway surrounded by vines, and the light entering the doorway felt very welcoming.

This picture was taken at Versailles in France. It is one of the many entrances surrounding the palace. The archways are representative of the Gothic era in architecture. They were used mainly to provide support.

Florance, Italy, CAPA Summer 2022
This Florence tradition is called Calcio Storico, where once a year the four neighborhoods of Florence compete in a sporting event. This was taken when the Santa Maria Novella fans climbed the outer fence to release the team's colors into the air to spark competition.
